Funds on hold
Etsy payment account on hold: why deposits stop and how to release them
Etsy holds seller funds in a few distinct ways, and the wording in your notice tells you which one you have. A reserve holds a percentage of new sales and releases on a rolling schedule. A full hold stops deposits entirely pending a review. Verification holds sit in place until documents are accepted. Each clears on a different trigger, so the first job is reading which one applies rather than opening a support ticket about all of them.

Identify the type of hold
Open Shop Manager, then Finances, then Payment account. Etsy shows the amount held and normally states a reason and a release schedule.
Match the wording in your payment account or email notice.
Payment reserve
A percentage of each sale is held and released on a rolling schedule, often around 45 days. Common for newer shops. It shrinks as you build a clean delivery record.
Deposits paused, review
Etsy is reviewing the shop. Nothing releases until the review closes, and it usually needs information from you rather than time.
Verification hold
Identity, bank, or card verification is incomplete or mismatched. Clears when the documents are accepted, and not before.
Post-suspension hold
The shop is suspended or closed. Funds are retained to cover refunds and disputes on orders already placed, then released.
A reserve and a paused deposit look almost identical in the balance, and they need completely different responses.
Why Etsy places a hold
- A new or fast-growing shop. Etsy is exposed to refunds it may have to fund itself. Reserves are routine here and are not an accusation.
- A sudden change in selling pattern. A spike in order value or volume, a jump into a higher-risk category, or a shift in where orders are coming from.
- Delivery not confirmed. Orders marked shipped with no tracking, or tracking that never scans.
- Open cases and disputes. Non-delivery claims, chargebacks, and unresolved Etsy cases all draw against the balance.
- Incomplete verification. Bank details that do not match the shop owner, or an unfinished identity check.
- Policy review. Handmade policy questions, prohibited items, or an IP complaint, which usually holds funds alongside the listing action.
What actually releases the money
- 1
Add real tracking to every order, the day it ships
Delivery confirmation is the single strongest signal available to you. Etsy needs to see that what was paid for arrived. Orders marked shipped without tracking do the opposite of helping.
- 2
Complete verification fully, not partially
A half-finished verification holds funds indefinitely and often produces no follow-up prompt. Check the payment account for outstanding requests even if you believe you finished.
- 3
Close open cases yourself
Every unresolved case is a claim against the held balance. Resolving it directly with the buyer, including refunding where it is genuinely your error, releases more than it costs.
- 4
Message buyers before they chase you
A buyer who has been told about a delay rarely opens a case. This is the cheapest protection available for a held balance and it takes minutes.
- 5
Then contact Etsy once, specifically
Reference the hold as stated in your payment account and ask what condition has to be met to release it. A general request to release funds gets a general answer that repeats the notice you already read.
What does not work
- Asking buyers to pay outside Etsy. A serious policy breach that closes shops, and it removes buyer protection, so it invites the disputes you are trying to avoid.
- Changing the bank account mid-hold. It restarts verification and resets any progress on the review.
- A chargeback or bank dispute against Etsy. It does not reach the held balance and it converts a payments question into a risk case against the shop.
- Opening a second shop. Etsy links accounts by device, address, and payment details, and a second shop normally means both are closed with the funds still held.
- Cancelling unfulfilled orders in bulk. Refunds against the balance, damage to your metrics, and it confirms the risk picture behind the hold.
If the shop is suspended too
When a hold arrives alongside a suspension, the money is really a separate question from the shop. Etsy retains the balance until the claim window on your last orders passes, then releases what is left after refunds and fees. Fulfilling everything already sold, with tracking, is what protects it, and it does that whether or not the appeal succeeds. The Etsy suspension guide covers the appeal itself.
Common questions
How long does an Etsy payment reserve last?
+
A reserve holds a percentage of each sale and releases it on a rolling schedule, often around 45 days per order, and it typically reduces as the shop builds a confirmed delivery record. Your payment account shows the schedule that applies to you.
Why are my Etsy deposits paused with no explanation?
+
Most often incomplete verification or an open review. Check Finances, then Payment account, for outstanding document requests, since a partly finished verification holds funds without generating a new prompt.
Will Etsy release my funds if my shop is closed?
+
Normally yes, once the claim period on your final orders passes and open cases are resolved. Etsy deducts refunds, disputes, and fees first, so fulfilling outstanding orders with tracking directly protects what you receive.
Can I speed up a release by contacting Etsy support?
+
Only if you can name the hold as stated in your payment account and ask what specific condition releases it. Repeated general requests do not move an automated reserve and add noise to a manual review.
