Funds on hold
eBay funds on hold: why payouts stop and how to get them released
eBay holds payouts for a small number of distinct reasons, and each one clears differently. Working out which hold you are in matters more than anything else you do, because the action that releases a new-seller hold is not the action that releases a risk hold, and calling support about the wrong one wastes the days you can least afford.

Identify which hold you are in
Seller Hub shows held funds and usually gives a reason and an expected release date. Start there rather than with support, because the reason determines everything that follows.
- New or returning seller hold. Standard for accounts without a selling track record. Funds are released once delivery is confirmed, or after a set period from the sale. It is automatic, it is not a judgement about you, and it eases as you build history.
- Order-level hold. Tied to specific transactions, typically where a buyer has opened a case, a return is in progress, or delivery cannot be confirmed. Only the affected orders are held.
- Risk or payment review hold. eBay's payments risk team is reviewing the account, often after a spike in volume or value, or a change of bank details. This one runs longest and needs documents rather than patience alone.
- Verification hold. Identity, business, or bank verification is incomplete. Clears when the documents are accepted.
- Post-suspension hold. Funds retained after a restriction or suspension to cover refunds, returns, and chargebacks on orders already placed.
What actually releases funds faster
- 1
Upload valid tracking on every order, same day
Delivery confirmation is the trigger for release on new-seller and order-level holds. Tracking that eBay can scan and follow is the mechanism. Tracking entered late, or numbers that never scan, keep the money exactly where it is.
- 2
Close open cases and returns
Any unresolved case is a claim against the balance. Resolving them directly with the buyer, even at some cost, usually releases more than it costs, and it protects your defect rate at the same time.
- 3
Complete every verification prompt in full
Part-completed verification holds funds indefinitely and gives no error to chase. Check the account for outstanding requests even if you believe you finished them.
- 4
For risk reviews, send the documents proactively
Supplier invoices for current stock, proof of the business address, and bank statements matching the registered payout account. A risk review is a question about whether you can deliver what you sold, and documents answer it faster than messages.
- 5
Then call once, with specifics
Have the hold reason, the affected order numbers, and your tracking to hand. Ask what specific condition has to be met for release. A general request to release funds gets a general answer.
What does not work
- Opening a chargeback or a bank dispute against eBay. It does not reach the held balance and it converts a payments question into a risk case against your account.
- Asking buyers to pay you off-platform. This is a serious policy violation that ends accounts, and it removes buyer protection, so it also invites the disputes you are trying to avoid.
- Cancelling unfulfilled orders in bulk. It looks like an exit, it damages your metrics, and it triggers refunds against the held funds.
- Opening a second account to keep trading. Linked and suspended, and it puts the held balance at greater risk rather than less.
Common questions
How long does eBay hold funds for a new seller?
+
Typically until delivery is confirmed, or a set number of days from the sale if it is not. Uploading valid tracking promptly is what shortens it, and the hold eases as the account builds a delivery record.
Can eBay hold funds indefinitely?
+
Holds are tied to a condition, such as delivery confirmation, a completed verification, or the end of the claim window. A hold that appears indefinite almost always has an unmet condition behind it, most often incomplete verification, which is why identifying the reason matters more than waiting.
Will eBay release funds if my account is suspended?
+
Normally yes, once the claim period on your last orders closes and any open cases are resolved. Continuing to fulfil and track pre-suspension orders is the most reliable way to protect the balance.
Does contacting support speed up a release?
+
Only when you can name the hold reason and ask what specific condition releases it. Repeated general requests do not move an automated hold and can slow a manual review by adding noise to the case.
