Etsy shop suspended: how to appeal and what Etsy is actually checking

Etsy suspensions usually come down to one of four things: the handmade policy, intellectual property complaints, account or payment verification, or buyer-experience metrics. Etsy appeals are handled largely by email and the process is less structured than Amazon's, which makes the quality of your first message matter more, because you often get one substantive exchange rather than a documented cycle.

Why Etsy suspends shops

  • Handmade policy. Etsy requires that items are made or designed by you, or are genuine vintage, or are craft supplies. Reselling mass-produced goods as handmade is the single most common cause of permanent closure.
  • Production partner not disclosed. Using an outside manufacturer is allowed, but only if you designed the item and you have declared the production partner. Undisclosed partners read as reselling.
  • Intellectual property complaint. A rights owner reported your listings for copyright or trademark infringement. Fan art, character designs, branded slogans, and licensed imagery drive most of these.
  • Prohibited items. Anything on Etsy's prohibited list, which is broader than sellers expect and includes certain health claims, regulated goods, and some digital products.
  • Account or payment verification. Identity, bank, or card verification not completed, or a mismatch between the shop owner and the payment account.
  • Buyer experience. A cluster of non-delivery cases, unresolved disputes, or chargebacks in a short window.
  • Linked accounts. A new shop opened by someone with a previously closed account, which Etsy detects by device, address, and payment details.

Before you write anything

  1. Read your listings the way a reviewer will. If items were bought in and resold, the appeal cannot rest on claiming otherwise. Etsy reverse-image searches listing photographs, and that is usually how it was caught.
  2. Collect proof of your process. Work-in-progress photographs, your workspace, tools, raw material invoices, design files with creation dates. For vintage, provenance and photographs showing age and wear.
  3. Check your production partners. If you use one, is it declared in your shop settings? Adding the declaration before you appeal shows the fix rather than promising it.
  4. Screenshot your open orders. You need to know exactly what is unfulfilled, because that is your first obligation regardless of the appeal.

Writing the appeal

Reply to the suspension email, or use the appeal link in the notice. Keep it under a page. Attach the evidence rather than describing it. Etsy's reviewers respond to specifics about how items are made, and not at all to how much the shop matters to you, however true that is.

Orders and money during a suspension

Etsy typically holds the payment account balance while a shop is under review, and continues to hold it after closure until the claim window on your last orders passes. Two things protect that balance: fulfilling everything already sold, with tracking uploaded, and resolving open cases rather than letting them time out into automatic refunds. Contact buyers directly through Etsy Messages to explain any delay. A buyer who has been told what is happening rarely opens a case.

If the suspension was an IP complaint

As on other marketplaces, Etsy acts on the rights owner's notice and will not decide the underlying dispute. Removing the listings, then approaching the rights owner for a retraction, is the route that works. The counter-notice process exists but is a legal instrument with real consequences, so take advice before using it.

Common questions

How long does an Etsy appeal take?

+

Commonly a few business days to a couple of weeks for a first response. Etsy does not publish a target, and follow-up exchanges can add time, so treat your first message as the one that counts.

Can a permanently closed Etsy shop be reopened?

+

It is much harder than reversing a suspension, and for handmade-policy or repeat-infringement closures it is rare. Where the closure rested on a factual error, for example a wrongly linked account, a clear evidenced appeal is still worth making.

Will Etsy release my funds if my shop is closed?

+

Etsy normally holds the balance until the claim period on your last orders passes, then releases what remains after refunds and fees. Fulfilling outstanding orders with tracking is the most effective way to protect it.

Does using a production partner break Etsy's handmade policy?

+

No, as long as you designed the item and you have declared the production partner in your shop settings. Undeclared partners are the problem, not partners in themselves.
