Account suspended or deactivated

eBay account suspended: how to read the notice and write an appeal that works

An eBay suspension is a decision about a pattern, not about one order. Your appeal only works if it names the pattern eBay saw, shows what you changed, and proves the change is already in place. Guessing at the reason is the single most common way sellers waste their first appeal, and the first appeal is the one that carries the most weight.

What the suspension notice actually tells you

eBay sends suspension and restriction notices as a message in your account plus an email to your registered address. Sellers usually refer to them by the code in the message header, and those codes tell you which team made the decision and therefore who you are writing to.

  • Selling restricted, account under review. Often seen as an MC011-style notice. Your listings come down and you cannot list again while eBay asks for information, usually identity or business documents. This is a verification hold, not a policy judgement, and it is generally the fastest kind to clear.
  • Account suspended. Selling and buying are both blocked. This follows a policy decision: selling practices, item safety, prohibited items, or repeated performance failures.
  • Indefinite suspension. eBay has decided the relationship is over. These are the hardest to reverse and usually follow either a severe single violation or a long pattern that earlier warnings did not fix.

Find the real reason before you write anything

The notice gives you a policy name. It rarely gives you the evidence. Your job before writing is to reconstruct what eBay saw, because your appeal has to speak to that evidence rather than to your own sense of how the account was going.

  1. 1

Open your Seller Dashboard and read the standards, not the summary

Look at defect rate, cases closed without seller resolution, late shipment rate, and tracking upload rate. Compare them against the thresholds shown on the dashboard for your selling region. A Below Standard rating in the evaluation period before the suspension is very often the whole story.

  2. 2

Pull the last 90 days of cases and returns

Sort by outcome. Cases that closed in the buyer's favour without you resolving them are weighted heavily. Count them, and identify whether they cluster around one SKU, one supplier, or one shipping method. A cluster is a root cause you can name.

  3. 3

Check for policy messages you dismissed

Warnings, listing removals, and account health messages from the months before the suspension are the paper trail eBay will reference. If you were warned twice about the same thing, your appeal has to acknowledge that directly rather than hope it goes unmentioned.

  4. 4

Check whether another account is involved

eBay links accounts by address, device, payment method, and contact details. If an account connected to yours was suspended, yours can be suspended for that link alone, and no amount of argument about your own performance will address it.

The four things an appeal has to do

eBay appeal reviewers work through volume. A long letter that buries the point performs worse than a short one that lands it. Every effective appeal does these four things in this order.

  1. Name the root cause in one sentence. Not the symptom. Not the buyer. The operational reason the pattern happened, stated plainly.
  2. Accept responsibility without arguing. Reviewers are not judging whether the outcome was fair. Disputing the decision in the first paragraph is the fastest route to a denial.
  3. Show the corrective action you have already taken. Past tense, with dates. Something you promise to do carries almost no weight next to something you have done.
  4. Show the preventative control that makes recurrence unlikely. This is the part most sellers skip, and it is the part that decides borderline cases. A control is a process or a system, not an intention.

Appeal template

eBay suspension appeal

Replace every bracket. Keep it under roughly 400 words. Do not attach anything that was not asked for, and do not send the same text twice.

Subject: Appeal, account [username], suspension notice dated [date]

I am appealing the suspension of [username] issued on [date] under [exact policy named in the notice].

Root cause. Between [month] and [month], [state the operational failure in one or two sentences: for example, I listed stock held by a single supplier without verifying availability at the point of sale, which produced [N] cancellations and [N] late dispatches]. This was my failure to control, not the supplier's.

What I have already done.
- [Date]: [action, for example, ended all listings for stock I do not hold physically, [N] listings removed].
- [Date]: [action, for example, refunded all [N] affected buyers in full and messaged each one].
- [Date]: [action, for example, cleared the dispatch backlog, all outstanding orders now tracked and delivered].

What prevents this recurring.
- [Control, for example, I now hold all listed inventory in my own unit and reconcile stock daily before listing].
- [Control, for example, dispatch cutoff moved to 2pm with same-day tracking upload, so late dispatch cannot accrue silently].
- [Control, for example, a stock alert pauses any listing that drops below two units].

I have reviewed [policy name] in full and my account is now operating within it. I am asking you to reinstate selling privileges on [username].

What happens to your money

Funds are the reason most sellers panic, and the panic often produces the behaviour that makes reinstatement harder. Suspension normally puts payouts on hold while eBay covers the tail of buyer claims, returns, and chargebacks on orders you already shipped. Holds of around 30 days after the last transaction are common, and risk-related holds can run considerably longer.

  • Keep fulfilling and tracking every order placed before the suspension. Abandoning them converts a policy problem into a performance problem and guarantees claims against the held balance.
  • Answer buyer messages even while suspended, if the account still allows it. Unanswered messages become cases, and cases become deductions.
  • Do not open a chargeback or a payment dispute against eBay to recover the balance. It rarely works and it removes any goodwill from the appeal.

If your first appeal is denied

A denial narrows your options but does not close them. What it does do is raise the bar: the second submission has to contain something genuinely new, because a reviewer who sees the same argument again will simply confirm the first decision.

  1. 1

Work out which of the four elements was missing

In most denied appeals the root cause was vague, or the preventative control was a promise rather than a system. Reread what you sent as though you were the reviewer with 90 seconds to spend on it.

  2. 2

    Add evidence, not volume

Supplier invoices, a screenshot of the new stock process, proof of delivery on the backlog. Concrete artefacts move a case. Restating your history does not.

  3. 3

    Escalate through eBay's own channels

Phone support and social support handle a different queue than the appeal form. Ask specifically for the decision to be reviewed by the team that issued it, and reference your case number every time.

  4. 4

Know when the answer is final

If eBay confirms an indefinite suspension after a full review, opening a new account to get around it is a policy violation in itself. It will be linked and suspended, and it damages any remaining chance on the original account.

Common questions

How long does an eBay appeal take?

+

Verification holds often clear within a few business days once the right documents are accepted. Policy suspensions typically take 3 to 7 business days for a decision, and complex cases involving multiple violations or held funds can run to 30 days.

Can I appeal an eBay suspension more than once?

+

Yes, but each submission has to add something new. Repeating the same appeal wording gets the original decision confirmed. Add evidence, a clearer root cause, or a preventative control you have actually implemented since the last attempt.

Will eBay tell me exactly why I was suspended?

+

Usually not in detail. The notice names the policy, and you have to reconstruct the evidence from your Seller Dashboard, your case history, and the warnings you received beforehand. This is why identifying the pattern yourself matters so much.

Can I sell on eBay under a family member's account?

+

No. eBay treats an account operated by a suspended seller as an extension of the suspended account, and both get suspended. It also puts the other person's account at permanent risk.

Does eBay release held funds after a suspension?

+

Normally yes, once the claim window on your last orders has closed, commonly around 30 days but longer where risk or unresolved cases are involved. Continuing to fulfil and track pre-suspension orders is the most reliable way to protect the balance.
