Selling restriction or hold

eBay selling limits: how to get them raised and why requests get refused

Selling limits are not a restriction, even though they feel like one. They are eBay capping its exposure until you have shown you can deliver at volume. That distinction matters, because limits are raised by evidence rather than by asking well. Sell into your current limit cleanly, ship on time with tracking, keep cases at nothing, and the increases follow. Asking with an empty sales record almost never works.

The two kinds of limit

Sellers often chase the wrong one. Check Seller Hub, then Overview, then Monthly limits, to see which is actually binding.

  • Account limits. A cap on how many items you can list and how much you can sell per month across the account. This is the one most new sellers hit.
  • Category limits. A separate cap inside a specific category, common in higher-risk ones such as phones, sneakers, and branded goods. You can be well inside your account limit and still blocked in a category.

What eBay looks at before raising a limit

What a limit increase is judged on

Helps your request

  • Selling close to your current limit, not sitting well under it
  • Valid tracking uploaded on every order, before the dispatch deadline
  • On-time delivery with no late shipments in the recent window
  • No open cases, and no cases closed without seller resolution
  • Feedback and detailed seller ratings consistently high
  • Stable listing behaviour rather than a sudden category jump
  • Verified identity, address, and bank details already complete

Gets it refused

  • Requesting an increase before using the limit you already have
  • Orders marked dispatched with no tracking, or numbers that never scan
  • Any recent case closed without resolution, however small
  • Cancellations for out of stock in the last measurement period
  • A recent policy warning or listing removal on the account
  • Requesting again days after a refusal
  • Incomplete verification anywhere on the account

The single most common reason for refusal is asking too early. An account selling five items a month will not be given room for five hundred.

The sequence that works

How limits actually rise
  1. Complete verification fully

Identity, address, and payout bank details. Limits will not move while anything is outstanding.

  2. Sell into your existing limit

Use most of it. eBay is looking for evidence of delivery at your current level before it extends the next one.

  3. Ship early with tracking on everything

Same-day or next-day dispatch, uploaded before the deadline. This is the metric that carries the most weight.

  4. Keep the month clean

No cases closed without resolution, no out of stock cancellations, nothing unresolved sitting open.

  5. Then request, or wait for the automatic review

Many accounts are reviewed monthly and raised without a request. Asking is worth it once the record supports it.

You can request an increase from Seller Hub, or by calling eBay. Calling is worth doing when your record is genuinely good and an automated review has not moved you, because a representative can look at the account and action it in the conversation.

What to say when you request an increase

Works as a call script or as the message body. Have the numbers to hand before you start.

I would like to request a selling limit increase.

Current position
My limit is [number] items and [amount] per month. Over the last [30 / 60] days I have sold [number] items totalling [amount], which is [percentage] of the limit.

Performance
Every order in that period shipped with tracking, [number] of [number] dispatched within [1] business day. On-time delivery is [percentage]. I have [zero] cases closed without resolution and [zero] out of stock cancellations.

Why I need the increase
[Concrete and specific. Example: I have [number] units of [product] in stock, bought from [supplier], and I am currently unable to list them within my monthly limit.]

Stock and fulfilment
The stock is on hand at my own premises, and I dispatch with [carrier] on a [service] service. I can support the higher volume without changing my handling time.

Requested limit
[Number] items and [amount] per month.

If a request is refused

  1. Ask what specifically blocked it. There is usually one identifiable item: an open case, a late dispatch, an unfinished verification step. That answer is worth more than a second request.
  2. Fix that item and trade for another 30 days. Most measurement windows are monthly, so a clean month is the fastest legitimate route.
  3. Do not resubmit immediately. Repeated requests within days are refused automatically and add nothing to the account record.
  4. Check whether it is a category cap. If you are blocked in one category only, an account-level increase will not help, and the category cap needs raising specifically.

Common questions

How often does eBay raise selling limits?

+

Many accounts are reviewed roughly monthly and raised automatically where the record supports it. You can also request an increase at any point, though a request made before you have used your existing limit is normally refused.

Why was my selling limit increase refused with good feedback?

+

Feedback is not the deciding factor. Refusals usually come down to unused headroom in your current limit, missing or non-scanning tracking, a case closed without resolution, out of stock cancellations, or an incomplete verification step somewhere on the account.

Can I get selling limits removed completely?

+

Established accounts with a long clean record can reach very high limits, and some no longer see a practical cap. It follows sustained performance at volume rather than a request, and category caps can still apply separately.

Do selling limits reset each month?

+

Monthly limits apply to the calendar month, so headroom refreshes, but the limit itself only changes when eBay raises it. Hitting the cap repeatedly is a strong argument for an increase, not a problem in itself.
